The Great Depression1. What is "Black Tuesday" and why does it mark the beginning of the Great Depression?
Black Tuesday was the day that the stock market crashed completely. It happened on October 29th, 1929. The prices for stocks were too high, and people were loaning too much. Stocks lost about 15% of their value on this day. 2. Many people believe that WWII marked the end of the Great Depression. How did the war affect the economy? During the war, many jobs were left empty due to the growing number of soldiers being deployed. Women usually took over most of the jobs, decreasing the rate of unemployment. Manufacturing of weaponry became big during this time. 3. What president was inaugurated in 1933? What were some of the changes made by this administration? Franklin D. Roosevelt. Unlike previous president, Herbert Hoover, Roosevelt believed in helping the people recover. He creates thousands of jobs that employed millions of Americans. 4. What was the New Deal? How did the New Deal affect American citizens? An economic measure, introduced by FDR in 1933, to help counteract the affects of the Great Depression. Most citizens believed that the New Deal failed. Although, it did counteract many affects. 5. What was the Dust Bowl? The Dust Bowl was set in five southwestern states. For a period of six years, the land had dried. The winds, however, kept strong. They would blow dust off the land everywhere. No crops were able to be harvested during this time, much damage was made. 6. How did the Dust Bowl affect the Southern Plains? The plains were left mostly in ruins, no crops were able to be planted. During the winds, a great majority of topsoil had been blown away. Leaving nothing much for the poor farmers. 7. What affect did the Dust Bowl have on agriculture? How would this affect farmers and their employers? The dust bowl ruined many cash crops. Unable to harvest their crops, farmers began to loose money. Many people were left homeless, too poor to pay their bills. |
