Growing Up In The SouthGrowing up in the south during this time period was very different for whites and blacks. Blacks mainly recall the bad treatment they got from whites and the slavery, while whites mostly remember the Great Depression and whether they were part of a good or bad family. Whites were taught to respect "colored" people. They were raised to not call them blacks, also. It was supposed to be "colored". What was considered to be a "good family" was a white family whose father had a job and made good money, while they attended church often. Being an african american was not easy for most of them. For black women, the jobs offered were usually domestic. Such as, doing laundry or being a cook, maid, teacher, or nurse.
